William Douglas “Bill” Lewis, Sr, 96, of 1161 Margaret Rd, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 4, 2024, at his home with his family by his side.
Graveside Services will be held Wednesday, May 8 at 12:00 PM at the Faison Cemetery with Rev. Jabe Largen officiating.
Born in 1928 in Sampson County, Bill was the son of the late William Emmett and Annie Adams Lewis. After serving his country in the United States Army during the Korean War, he married Patricia Anne Moore of Turkey, NC, and raised three children in the house that he built near his childhood home. As a teacher at North Duplin High School, he made an impact on many students whom he remained in contact with over the years. “Mr. Bill”, as he was fondly known, served his community as a lifelong member of the Faison Fire Department, a “Lion” in the Faison Lions Club, and a member of Faison United Methodist Church. In addition to farming, tending his grapes, and making wine for his friends, he enjoyed working in his shop, also known as the “Culture Club”, where he socialized with his neighbors and friends. Bill’s quiet kindness and generosity have left an indelible mark on his community.
Bill is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Anne Moore Lewis of Faison; daughter, Carol Poortvliet (Ken) of Greensboro; son, Doug Lewis of Faison; six grandchildren, Olivia Lake Stocks (Byrne), Will Lewis, Maggie Lewis, Jacob Lewis, Elizabeth Poortvliet, Emily Poortvliet, and two great-grandchildren, Laythan Stocks and Gracie Stocks.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, John Moore Lewis, sister, Ella Cobb, and brother, Luther Lewis.
The family will receive friends following the graveside service at the Faison Recreation Center, 184 Park Circle, Faison, NC, and other times at his home.
In lieu of Flowers, memorials may be made to Faison Fire Department, 108 SW Center St., Faison, NC 28341 or Faison Lions Club, ℅ Lion President Skippy Jackson, 207 Archer Lane, Faison, NC 28341.
