William Ashley Powell

William Ashley Powell, born April 21, 1961, in Sampson County, age 62, passed away from heart failure at New Hanover Regional Medical Center on March 15, 2024.  He was the son of the late Johnny Ashley Powell and Mary Idella "Della" Powell.

William grew up in Harrells, NC and attended Union High School.  After school, he was a farmer.  He served as the Mayor of Harrells from 1992-1997 and was a board member for the Town of Harrells for 9 years. He also worked for more than 10 years at Meherrin Agricultural & Chemical Company. For the past few years, he owned and operated Harrells Store.

William was a member of Siloam Baptist Church where he served as a deacon.   

He enjoyed golfing and hunting with his boys. He always supported his sons’ athletic games, cheering them on at football games, and assisted in coaching the golf team at Harrells Christian Academy.  He was always thoughtful of others and proudly gave away the peaches he grew.

William is survived by his two sons, Jonathan Melvin Powell of Willard and Grant Lee Powell of Harrells.  He is also survived by two sisters, Betty Wilson (Dural) of Turkey, and Mary Powell (Joe) of Watha, and three brothers, Ray Powell, Jimmy Powell (Loretta), and Charles Powell (Karen) all of Harrells.  He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.     

The family will receive friends at Siloam Baptist Church, Harrells, NC on Sunday, March 17,  from 6 until 8 PM.  

A Private Graveside Service will be held Monday, March 18 at the Harrells Cemetery.
