Wesley (Wes) McKenzie Purcell

Wesley (Wes) McKenzie Purcell, of Raleigh, North Carolina, was received into the loving arms of Jesus on June 16, 2026. A loyal and dependable son, brother, brother-in-law, uncle, cousin, nephew, and friend, Wes brought endless love and light into the lives of everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. Wes had an infectious smile and a contagious laugh that could fill any room with warmth and happiness.

Wes was born on October 9, 1991, in Raleigh, North Carolina, to Mac and Dale Purcell. Wes was a wonderful son who loved his parents deeply and brought immeasurable joy and pride to their lives. Family meant everything to Wes, and one of his greatest joys was being an older brother to Alex. Their bond was filled with love, laughter, encouragement, and a lifetime of supporting each other through every chapter. Wes was also blessed with the title of “Uncle Wes” when his precious niece, Dillon Elizabeth, was born last December. He adored her, and the love they shared was a beautiful reflection of the big heart he carried.

From a young age, Wes had a deep love for the outdoors and adventure. He enjoyed playing sports, attending sporting events, deep sea fishing, hunting, and snow skiing. Wes was incredibly talented in many areas, and was an exceptional grillmaster, especially when it came to a 16oz porterhouse. Wes also had a natural ability when it came to being on the water. He was a gifted boatman, and his family admired the confidence and skill with which he navigated the waters and currents of Ocean Isle Beach. Whether guiding a boat through the channels or docking with only inches to spare, Wes handled every trip with precision, patience, and ease.

Wes attended Clinton City Schools and graduated from Clinton High School, where he proudly represented his school as a member of both the football and baseball teams, as well as the marching band. On the football field, Wes excelled as a defensive end and was a standout special teams player. During one unforgettable game his junior year, Wes scored 11 points as the team’s kicker, making two field goals and going 5-for-5 on extra points in the pouring rain. His incredible performance earned him the regional ESPN Player of the Week award.

Wes was a lifelong member of Graves Memorial Presbyterian Church, where he especially loved to play basketball and kickball in between Sunday School and Church. Wes was also a proud Eagle Scout, earning the highest rank with Troop 80. He especially treasured the Scouts camping trips, where he enjoyed the outdoors, the friendships he made, and the memories created along the way.

After graduating from Clinton High School, Wes attended North Carolina State University, where his lifelong love for the Wolfpack only grew stronger. He was a devoted NC State fan who deeply loved everything connected to his alma mater. Wes especially cherished Saturday mornings at Carter-Finley Stadium, where his tailgate gatherings became a joyful reflection of his natural ability to bring people together. In 2015, Wes graduated from NC State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Sport Management. During his time there, he was also an active and proud member of the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity, where he built lasting friendships and served the NC State community.

For the past eight years, Wes served as a Financial Advisor/First Vice President with Merrill Lynch. He was deeply respected and loved by his clients, who valued not only his financial guidance but also the genuine care and attention he gave to their families’ long-term well-being. Wes consistently exceeded expectations, achieving every production goal ahead of schedule and completing his training program six months early.

Wes is survived by his parents Dale & Mac Purcell, his brother Alex Purcell, sister-in-law Madison Phillips Purcell, niece Dillon Elizabeth Purcell, aunts Paula Williamson O’Briant (Thad), Wanda Williamson Coleman (Joel), Linda Precythe Williamson, uncles Bobby Purcell (Lori), and Marvin Carver, cousins Ginny Williamson Hillhouse (Doug), Elizabeth Williamson, Jeff Carver (Amanda), Barrett Carver Muth (Devin), Catherine Coleman Yancey (Hunter), Margaret Coleman (fiancee Witt Moye), Elizabeth Coleman, John Purcell (Audrey), Paige Purcell Noreen (Bryan), Will Roberts (Meghan), and Ben Roberts (fiancee Abigail Shelton).

Wes was greeted in heaven by our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, his paternal grandparents Tink & Ed Purcell, his maternal grandparents Margaret & DeWitt Williamson, his aunt Mary Lynn Purcell Roberts & uncle Dereck Roberts, his uncle Kermit Williamson, and aunt Debbie Williamson Carver.

Wes will be remembered for his kind and genuine spirit, and for the joy and energy he brought into every room. His legacy lives on through his loving family and the many lives he touched along the way.

A Service to celebrate Wes’s Life will be held Tuesday, June 23, 2026, at 3:00 PM at Graves Memorial Presbyterian Church, 201 Fayetteville St., Clinton, NC., 28328 with Reverend Katherine Rives officiating. The family will receive friends following the service in the MacQueen Building.
