Mr. Walter Lee Vaughn, Jr. 82 of 516 Marsh Kornegay Rd. died at Southwood Nursing and Retirement Center Tuesday, January 18, 2022.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, January 23, 2022, at 11:00 AM at Piney Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Robert Beasley, Rev. Richard Weeks and Rev. Richard Walker officiating. Burial will follow in the Church Cemetery with Military Honors.
Born in 1939 in Kerrville, Tennessee, Walt was the son of the late Walter Lee Vaughn, Sr. and Katie Riales Vaughn. He joined the military in 1957 and while stationed at Camp LeJeune he met his sweetheart, Wilma Marie Thornton. They were married on January 17, 1959, and raised four sons. He proudly served his country for twenty-one years, retiring from the Marine Corp as a Gunnery Sergeant in 1978. He was an avid sportsman, including playing basketball and fastpitch softball; however, his greatest passion was golf. He also loved to travel with his wife and family. Walt had a zest for life, which was contagious. He had a heart of gold and a smile that would light up a room. His legacy will continue to live on through his loving family.
He is survived by his wife of sixty-three years, Wilma M. Vaughn; Four sons: Walter Lee Vaughn, lll and wife, Catherine of Dunn, Andrew Phillip Vaughn and wife, Dee of Lakeland, Fla., Bobby Gene Vaughn and wife, Sharon of Faison, Mark Anthony Vaughn of Faison; two sisters: Ann Beard of Brighton, Tenn. and Maylene Walker of Faison; two brothers: Robert Vaughan of Athens, Ala. and Jackie Vaughan of Greenfield, Tenn.; ten grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Katrine Bragg and a grandson, Phillip Edward Vaughn.
The family will receive friends following the service at the cemetery and other times at his home.
