Pieter Jan Westerbeek
May 8, 1938 ~ January 24, 2024 (age 85) 85 Years Old
Mr. Pieter Jan Westerbeek, 85, of 40 Wendy Lane passed away Wednesday, January 24, 2024, at Mary Gran Nursing Center.
Born on May 8, 1938, in Long Island, New York, Piet was the son of the late Cornelious Westerbeek and Christina Van Dyke Westerbeek. He was a member of Graves Memorial Presbyterian Church where he faithfully attended and served as his health permitted. Piet was a two-time graduate of NC State finishing with a Master of Agriculture in Horticulture. He was employed for 30-plus years with NC State University and Sampson County as the Commercial Horticultural Extension Agent. His career allowed him to work extensively with commercial fruit and vegetable farmers throughout North Carolina and beyond. After retirement, Piet served in the Lions Club in many capacities including as local chapter president. He served numerous terms as both a Deacon and an Elder at Graves Memorial Presbyterian Church and was known to distribute kind words, a glowing smile, and peppermints throughout the congregation every Sunday. Known throughout eastern NC for his pack of beagles, Piet was an avid hunter and fisherman, as well as a conservationist.
Piet is survived by his loving wife of 57 years Diane Jean Westerbeek; three sons: Pieter Westerbeek, Jr., (Glynda) of Cary, Kraig Westerbeek (Danna) of Warsaw, and Neill Westerbeek (Susan) of Clinton; eight grandchildren: Kyndall Marshburn (Carries), Kari Roberts (Brady), Pieter Westerbeek (Natalie), Kelli Westerbeek, Spencer Westerbeek, Karsyn Westerbeek, Laura Cate Westerbeek, Jase Westerbeek; great-granddaughter, Leighton Marshburn; three sisters: Mary Respess of Kinston, Jane Krombeen of Grand Rapids, Michigan, and Gerda Medley of Durham; brother, Case Westerbeek of Grand Rapids, Michigan and many special friends.
In addition to his parents, Piet was preceded in death by sister, Christine Quist, and brother, Jack Westerbeek.
Memorial Services will be held Sunday, February 4, at 4:00 PM at Graves Memorial Presbyterian Church with Rev. Dr. William Hawkins officiating. The family will receive friends prior to the services on Sunday beginning at 2:30 PM in the Mack Carmichael MacQueen Educational Building at Graves Memorial Presbyterian Church or other times at their homes.
