Nida Louise (Simmons) Renshaw, 87, of Clinton, NC was the youngest of the 13 children of Ernest James Simmons and Martha Lee (Goodman) Simmons, a member of the Coharie Tribe, born June 13, 1937. Nida is preceded in death by her Husband of 62 years Albert L. Renshaw, her parents and 12 siblings, brothers Ernest J Jr., Oliver G., Vascoe, James H. Rosco, Woodrow W., Emmett, Marshall. Sisters, Perlie Jacobs, Lydia Jacobs, Flairce Jackson, Catherine Jacobs.
Nida is survived by her 6 children and their spouses James L Renshaw (wife Carla) of Glen Allen, VA, Kenetter L. Bailey (husband Paul) of Catonsville, MD, Albert S. Renshaw (wife Yvonnie) of Hanover, PA, Henry L. Renshaw of Clinton, NC, Naomi S. Lamont (husband Carl) of Hanover, PA, Rev. Matthew W. Renshaw of Loris SC. As well as her 21 grandchildren and 40 great-grandchildren. A sister-in-law, Nancy Brown (husband Ralph) and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
Nida graduated from East Carolina Indian School in 1955. After graduation she moved to Woodbine, Md where she lived with her sister and brother-in-law, Flairce and Chester Jackson. She began working at Springfield State Hospital as a candy-striper and met the man that would become her lifelong husband, Albert Renshaw, that same year. Albert and Nida married on October 22, 1955.
Through the years, Nida worked at many jobs including, Lyons brother, Westinghouse, Donut World, St. Luke’s Nursing Home, London Fog, and High’s Dairy Store. She also ran her own business (Nida’s Needle) as a seamstress. She returned to Springfield State Hospital and worked in the Dietary Dept until retirement.
Nida was a member of The Full Gospel Pentecostal Church in Ellicott City, MD with her husband and family for 35 years. There she served the Lord as a Sunday School teacher, VBS teacher and director, wrote and produced Christmas plays, and was Youth Leader for 5 years.
In 1997, Nida and Albert moved back to her hometown of Clinton, NC. There she worked at The Coharie Day Care Center where she cooked and rocked the babies. Nida cared for Albert’s aunt and then her own sister. After their passing, Nida visited the nursing homes in town with ladies from her church and her son to sing hymns with the residents.
Nida was a member of Clinton Community Church in Clinton, NC, where she served the Lord as a Sunday School teacher, and a Prayer Team Partner. Nida also hosted a Small Group prayer meeting in her home and volunteered at the Royal Maternity Home.
Nida loved the Lord and her family fiercely. She was known to “go on the war path” as a prayer warrior and, on occasion, for not so spiritual reasons. She wasn’t perfect, but knew to call on her Savior when she failed. She loved to laugh and joke, tell stories and have the last word. She enjoyed visits from her family and friends and never turned down the chance to eat spots, “a little shrimp” and ice cream. She disliked snakes, being alone, and vacuum cleaner salesman, but that’s another story.
Funeral Services will be held Thursday, October 3, 2024 at 2:00 PM in the Sanctuary of Clinton Community Church with Rev. Mark Fields and Rev. Michael Cummings officiating. Burial will follow at New Bethel Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior, beginning at 1:00 PM in the Sanctuary and other times at her son, Henry’s home, 1055 Mt. Moriah Church Rd., Clinton, NC.
