Mrs. Waters was born in Duplin County, to the late John Wright and Effie Boyette. After attending Campbell College, now Campbell University, Mrs. Waters, a working mother, worked at Branch Banking and Trust Company in Faison. For much of her life, she worked as the bookkeeper at the store in Suttontown.
She lived her life selflessly, supporting her husband in his work as a farmer and nurturing her three children, ensuring that they were educated. She also loved her grandchildren and their children.
Mrs. Waters was married for 66 years to William Nelson “Bill” Waters, Sr., who died in 2013. She is survived by her three children, William Nelson Waters, Jr. and wife, Carolyn, of Clinton; Judy Waters Smith and husband, DeWitt, of Cary; Anita Waters Alpenfels and husband, Eric, of Pinehurst; and one sister, Annette Kernstein of Hope, Michigan. She also is survived by five grandchildren, Stephen Wright Waters and wife, Leigh; William Nelson Waters III and wife, Heather; Holly Smith Talton and husband, Gabe; Anna Smith Miller and husband, Rob; and Sarah Smith Barker and husband, Will. She was predeceased by her first grandchild, Christin Maria Waters Minchew. Eleven great-grandchildren were her pride and joy: Kendrick Minchew, Will Minchew, Jane Caroline Minchew, Anna Leigh Waters, William Nelson Waters IV, Wright Waters, Louis Talton, DeWitt Talton, Jerry Miller, Emma Barker and Wyatt Barker.
The family owes much gratitude to the caregivers who allowed Marie to remain at home even as her health declined.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church, 208 Sampson St. Clinton, NC.
