Mrs. Alice Matthis Obituary

Mrs. Alice Saunders Matthis, 82, of Taylors Bridge Hwy, passed away at her home on Tuesday morning, June 21, 2022 with her family by her side.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday afternoon, June 25, 2022 at 2:00 pm at the Royal-Hall Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Dalma Cribb and Rev. Chubby Reiber officiating.  Visitation with family and friends will be held immediately following the service on Saturday; and other times at her home.

Born on March 3, 1940 in the rural mountains of Virginia, Alice was the daughter of the late Lloyd Reid and Frances Trail Saunders. She successfully operated Matthis Accounting Service for 34 years.  Alice loved the Lord and His people and attended both Epworth Methodist Church and Plainview PFWB Church as her health permitted.  Alice enjoyed working with her clients; her Friday Night Oasis friends; sewing beautiful items for her family and friends; quilting; painting outdoor scenes; playing cards (and she played to win); playing basketball on her High School and Senior basketball teams; and serving the Lord through mission trips to Nicaragua and Red Bird Mission in Appalachia Kentucky.  An avid reader, her favorite authors include Nora Roberts, Danielle Steele, Zane Grey, and Louis L’Amour.  She had many talents and used them to make life better for others.  Most importantly, she loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  She never missed a game that her children played when they were young and grew to love the sports that her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren played.  Her dedication and love set the example for her family.  She will be greatly missed by all who knew her and were touched by her.

Alice is survived by her sons: Don Matthis and wife, Robin of Clinton; Eddie Matthis and fiancee’, Robin of Clinton; sister, Helen Lois “Susie” Trejo of Virginia; brothers: James Lloyd Saunders of Virginia and Roby David Saunders of Clinton.  She was also blessed by four grandchildren: Emily Matthis Warren (Ricky), James Matthis (Lesley), Edwin Matthis and Amberly Matthis Howell (Josh); eleven great-grandchildren: Reece and Preston Warren, Avett, Myles and Ben Matthis, Summerlynn and Elise Matthis, Evalynn Harris, Caroline, Luke and Alex Howell; and also, numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Lynda Saunders and three brothers: Numey, Jerry and Jack Saunders.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in memory of Alice Matthis to: Red Bird Mission, c/o Rev. Dalma Cribb, 204 Nancy Street, Lake Waccamaw NC 28450.
