Mr. Wilbert Leslie Dudley, 99 of 1057 Bell Woods Rd., passed away Wednesday, August 25, 2021 at his home.
Born on June 28, 1922 in Sampson County, Mr. Dudley was the son of the late Alda Craven Dudley and Lucille Clifton Dudley, and the widower of Elizabeth “Lizzie” Matthis Dudley, who was the love of his life. Wilbert was a proud veteran of the United States Army, having served in World War II and received four bronze stars and one purple heart. After serving his country, he married his sweetheart, Elizabeth “Lizzie” Matthis, and they raised three children at their home in Sampson County. He was a farmer, farming many types of crops and tobacco until his retirement. He has always had a passion for fishing, enjoying both freshwater and fishing at the Surf City pier. He was a hardworking, kind man who had a heart of gold and had an amazing memory until the last day. He loved talking and sharing his memories with everyone who came to visit. More than anything, he loved his family and will be greatly missed, but his legacy of love will live on through them.
He leaves behind to cherish his memory, his children, a daughter, Glenda D. Daughtry of Clinton; two sons: Jerry Dudley and wife, Mary of Chesapeake, Virginia; and Wilbert “Leslie” Dudley, Jr. and wife, Martha of Clinton. He was also blessed with six grandchildren: Kellie Langemeier (Dan), Gwen Hodges, Ryan Dudley (Keri), Brandon Dudley (Tara), Vicki Westbrook (Scotty), Jason Dudley (Jane), and fifteen great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents and wife, Lizzie, Mr. Wilbert was preceded in death by his sister, Ruby D. Matthis and brother, James Lendell Dudley.
The family would also like to thank Harriet Harrington of Intern Home Care for her kindness, love and care she provided to our father.
