Mr. Johnnie Powell Obituary

Mr. Johnnie Ashley Powell, 92 of 404 Tomahawk Hwy. passed away at Pender Memorial Hospital in Burgaw, Tuesday, July 6, 2021 with his family by his side.

A Graveside Service to celebrate Mr. Johnnie’s life will be held Friday, July 9th at 10:00 am at Harrells Cemetery with Rev. Ricky Wood, Rev. Leo Backen and Rev. Tim Register officiating.  The family will receive friends on Thursday evening, from 6-8 pm at Royal-Hall Funeral Home.

Born on August 31, 1928 in Sampson County, Johnnie was the son of the late Ellie James and Margie Anna Matthis Powell and the widower of Mary Idella Smith Powell. Johnnie was a member of Center Baptist Church and married the love of his life, Della, in 1948. They raised their family in Harrells and were always involved in the community, especially with their church and loved their church family. Mr. Johnnie was a crop and tobacco farmer the majority of his life, then helped his son with his hog farm. His other passion was fishing and working outside in his garden and yard. He always took pride in his yard, and loved riding his John Deere lawnmower as long as he was able.  More than anything, he loved his wife, Della and his children and grandchildren. He will definitely be missed by everyone who knew him and leaves his legacy of love behind.

He is survived by his two daughters: Betty Grey Wilson and husband, Dural of Turkey, Mary Powell and husband, Joe of Watha; four sons: Johnnie Ray Powell, Jimmy Lee Powell and wife, Loretta, William Ashley Powell, Charles Glenn Powell and wife, Karen all of Harrells; two sisters-in-law: Maxine Cashwell of Elizabethtown and Margie Mathews of Hope Mills. He was blessed with sixteen grandchildren, twenty-seven great-grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews and a special niece, Janet Jagunic and her husband, Larry.

In addition to his parents and wife Della, Johnnie was preceded in death by his son, Russell C. Smith; two of his great grandchildren; and one sister, Elizabeth Naylor.

Mr. Johnnie’s family would like to express their sincere appreciation to his loving and caring caregivers, Janice and Debbie and also to the staff of 3HC, Lower CapeFear Hospice and Pender Memorial Hospital for their compassionate care and kindness shown during his illness.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Center Baptist Church c/o Barbara Black, 3415 Lamb Rd., Garland, NC  28441.
