Obituary

Lou Alice (Sawyer) Royal, 89, passed away at
her home on July 22, after a long illness.  She was born on March 4, 1933, in Aiken County, SC, and at a young age moved to Salemburg, NC, where she grew up.  She earned a Bachelor’s Degree from Women’s College of UNC, and graduate degrees from both East Carolina and George Washington Universities.  She was married for more than 40 years to her loving husband,Leon Royal, who predeceased her in 1996.

Mrs. Royal was a teacher and elementary school principal in Virginia Beach, VA, public schools for 30 years, and was honored as a Nationally Distinguished Principal.  After retirement, the Royals returned to Sampson County, living in Clinton, and Mrs. Royal became an active member of the Clinton First Baptist Church, where she served as a Deacon and Sunday School teacher.  She also taught adult literacy at Sampson Community College, and was a prolific baker, known for her signature lemon pound cake.

Mrs. Royal is survived by her son and daughter, Scott and Caprice Royal, and their spouses, Steven Reiss and Bob Easley, as well as her loving sister and her husband, Mary and Pat Jones. She is also survived by her brother-in-law, Tom Royal, and his wife Pat Royal, sister-in-law, Joan Royal, as well as many nieces and nephews, grand-nieces and nephews, loving caregivers, and countless loyal friends.

The funeral service will be held at First Baptist Church of Clinton, on Monday, July 25, at 1pm, with the Reverend Dr. Ray Ammons presiding. Visitation will follow the service.  A family burial service will precede the funeral at Sunrise Memorial Gardens in Salemburg.  In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Alzheimer’s Association.
