Joyce Wise Obituary

Joyce Carolyn Crumpler Wise, 84, of 221 Pierce Street passed away Saturday, October 15, 2022 surrounded by her family at Wake Medical Center in Raleigh.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, October 19 at 2:00 PM at the Royal-Hall Funeral Home Chapel with Ron Davis officiating. Burial will follow in the Clinton Cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service beginning at 1:00 PM at the funeral home and other times at her home.

Born on February 20, 1938 in Sampson County, Joyce was the daughter of the late Everette B. Crumpler and Bessie Hudson Crumpler.  She was preceded in death by both parents along with three brothers and three sisters; James Henry (Willie) Crumpler, Everette B. (Juney) Crumpler, Jr., Raeford Gaston (Ray) Crumpler, Edna  Ruth Crumpler Shytle, Nora Grace Crumpler Mellott, and Bessie Jean Crumpler Owen Horne.   She is survived by her loving husband of 63 years, David Wise; two daughters, Melanie Herring and husband Jerry, of Clinton, and Wendy Williford and husband Van, of Newton Grove; three grandsons, Benjamin Herring and wife Christin, of Wendell, Adam Herring and wife Sherry, of Sanford, and Chandler Williford of Newton Grove. She also has one great-grandson, Everette Jude Herring.

Joyce was a member of West Clinton Free Will Baptist Church, a 1956 graduate of Clinton High School, and a graduate of the North Carolina School of Commerce in Charlotte. Following business school, Joyce worked as a legal secretary for Attorneys Paul D. Herring and Woodrow H. Peterson.  She was receptionist for Dermatologist Dr. John P. Surratt when his practice opened in Clinton and remained there until she retired in 2000.

Joyce was a 50 year member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She served at several stations and eventually became Worthy Matron. She was appointed District Deputy by the Worthy Grand Patron and also served as a Page for Brother Earl Warren, who was Worthy Grand Matron.

Joyce enjoyed spending time with her friends and family and supporting her children and grandchildren in their numerous endeavors. She was an excellent cook and baker. Her ball sugar cookies and three day coconut cakes were two of her specialties. She would always prepare more than enough at mealtime so she could share with her neighbors and family.  Joyce liked to sew and would buy colorful material to make pillow cases to share with her family and friends.   She also loved traveling to the beach, where she admired its natural beauties and made lifelong friendships that brought her joy and happiness.

One of Joyce’s favorite pastimes was taking pictures with her iPad to share on what she called “my Facebook”.  Staying connected to her friends and family and responding to all of their posts made her happy.

Joyce was affectionately called “Deda” by her grandchildren and was a tenderhearted mother and grandmother who would cry every time any of her family would leave her house to go back home.   She was a devout Christian who loved gospel music, the Hallmark Channel, Vince Gill, and George Strait.

She was an avid collector of Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls, angels, and collectible porcelain dolls. She was passionate about shopping for clothes, shoes, and jewelry, and keeping her hair absolutely perfect!

Joyce lived a life of service, driven by her faith and love for others. She will be greatly missed.
