Mrs. Helen Clifton Ballance, 92, of 5233 Taylor’s Bridge Highway, passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 8, 2026, at her home with her family by her side.
Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, February 11, at 2:00 PM at Mt. Gilead Baptist Church, 3949 Taylors Bridge Hwy., with Rev. Jeffery Barber officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Born on October 10, 1933, in Sampson County, Helen was the daughter of the late Gibbon Lavender and Lydia Quinn Clifton and the widow of Herbert Wesley Ballance. Helen was a devoted member for 74 years of the church she loved, Mt. Gilead Baptist. She worked for Roses Department Store and in child nutrition for Sampson County Schools at Union High School until she retired. Helen was a member of the Board of Directors for Taylor’s Bridge Fire Department, a member of the 76er’s Band, Golden Age Fun Club, and the Chicken Scratch Club.
Helen is survived by two daughters: Rebecca Ballance of Eastover, and Jennifer Ballance Edge, and husband, Robert, of Summerville, SC.; three sons: Hardy Ballance and wife Angie of Clinton, Douglas Ballance, and wife, Melissa, of Roseboro, and Rodney Ballance of Clinton; daughter-in-law, Barbara Ballance of Clinton; twelve grandchildren: Kelly Stancil, and husband, Eric, Mallory DeLuca and husband, J.B., Ryan Ballance, and wife, Allison, Joshua Ballance and wife, Emily, Jackson Ballance and wife, Katie, Joseph Ballance, Christin Edge, William Edge, Katlyn Ballance, Matthew Ballance and wife, Chelsea, Kenzie LaFleur and husband Jared, and Hannah Ballance; sixteen great-grandchildren; her God Granddaughter, Leigh-Anne Caddis Strickland, and husband, Colton; brother, Glenn Clifton, and wife, Linda, of Clinton; four sisters-in-law: Linda S. Clifton, Joyce Clifton, Patsy Clifton, and Peggy Clifton all of Clinton; and many extended family and friends.
In addition to her parents and husband, Herbert, Helen was preceded in death by her oldest son, Jimmy Ballance; two sisters: Doris Croom and Marie Hairr; and four brothers: James Clifton, Rev. Roy T. Clifton, Howard Clifton, and Charles Clifton.
The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Royal-Hall Funeral Home, 301 McKoy Street, and other times at her home.
