Mrs. Harriette Ann Thornton Hobbs, 86, of Clinton, passed away peacefully at home Thursday evening June 23, 2022, with loved ones by her side.
Funeral Services will be held Sunday, June 26 at 3:00 PM at Royal-Hall Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Michael Shook Officiating. Visitation with family and friends will be held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. A private burial at Piney Grove Baptist Church will be held on Monday.
Born October 13, 1935, in Sampson County, Harriette was the youngest of 5 children born to the late Langdon F. Thornton and Eula Casey Thornton. She was the widow of Thomas Carroll Hobbs. She was a graduate of East Carolina University with a degree in elementary education. Her gentle nature and soft voice made her perfect for her chosen career. Her love of children and teaching was evident each day from the moment she greeted her students. She took much pride in teaching and was often referenced as a student’s “favorite teacher”. She retired from Clinton City Schools. Upon her retirement, it became evident her farm upbringing remained strong in her blood. You would find her, sunup to sundown, behind a wide-brimmed hat in her flower beds. She planned, cultivated, and tended her yard with the same loving care demonstrated during her teaching career. Her yard was always a beauty to behold. Her legacy will continue through the plants she shared with family, neighbors, and friends far and wide.
Harriette was a member of Grove Park Baptist Church for more than 60 years. She was active in her Sunday School class, served on various committees, and dearly loved working with the youth as long as her health permitted. She will be missed by all who knew her and were touched by her.
Harriette is survived by her son, Thomas Hobbs of Raleigh and one brother, Bobby Thornton of Clinton, and many nieces and nephews whom she adored. In addition to her parents and husband, she was proceeded in death by her sister Miriam T. Gore and brothers Bromley Thornton and Eldon Thornton.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, beginning at 2:00 pm, at the funeral home; and other times at her home, located at 509 Allen Street, Clinton.
In lieu of flowers please consider a memorial to the children/youth department of Grove Park Baptist Church.
