Gladys Lee (Edwards) Godwin

On Thursday, December 23, 2021, Gladys Lee Godwin 86, of 702 Cutchin St., Clinton, went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She took her last breath at her earthly home, surrounded by her family, and was escorted to the presence of God by holy Angels. She is now reunited with her son, Ricky, who departed this earth on June 24, 2018. 

Gladys was the daughter of the late Annie Bell and Ed Edwards. She was born on October 11, 1935 in Sampson County and was preceded in death by her sister Elizabeth Pearce and her son, Ricky H. Godwin. 

Gladys leaves behind to cherish her memories: her husband, Leslie H. Godwin; daughter Jennifer Hatcher and husband Eddie Hatcher of Clinton; her two grandchildren, Nichole Mesimer and husband Ryan Mesimer of Greenville, NC, and Ashland Raynor of Clinton and friend David Bazemore of Clinton. She has two great-grandchildren, Adalynn and Maverick Mesimer of Greenville, NC; niece Tonya Clapper and husband John of Clinton; niece Shannon Strause and husband John Strause of Charlotte Texas; nephew Wayne Pearce of Forest City, NC.

She left a legacy that is and will have an everlasting impact on those who knew her. Her vibrance of life was contagious and her sense of humor was something you could not ignore. And her passion for family and friends was hardly a secret. Because she poured herself into the fabric of family with her undying love, patience, wisdom, grace, forgiveness, and mercy. 

She knew the value of friendship and servitude and exhibited it on a daily basis. And wherever she went, she was surely to find someone she knew and she never knew a stranger. And if you were, you weren't a stranger for long because she always extended the hand of friendship and love to those she met. Gladys was a devoted employee of Food Lion where she served for over 26 years until her retirement.

She will be missed dearly, but surely not forgotten. And this is not a goodbye, but rather, I will see you later on the streets of gold in glory with our God. 

Funeral services will be held on Sunday, December 26, 2021 at 3:00 pm at The First Baptist Church, 408 College St., Clinton, NC with Dr. Ray Ammons and Rev Eddie Hatcher officiating. Burial will follow at Springvale Cemetery (also known as the Clinton Cemetery). Family will receive friends from 2:00 pm - 2:45 pm, before the funeral service at the church, and other times at the home.
