Francis M Brown, Jr (Buster), age 87, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 5, 2026 at Hock Family Pavilion in Durham, surrounded by the love of his family. He was a loving husband, devoted father, proud grandfather and great-grandfather, cherished brother, and beloved uncle. His family was the center of his world, and he treasured every moment spent with them. He was born in Erwin, NC to the late Francis Milton Brown, Sr and Thressa M Brown. In addition to his parents, Francis was also predeceased by his beloved wife of 56 years, Janice Dixon Brown. After marrying on December 6, 1959, they created a loving home and a beautiful life together.
A lifelong lover of music, Francis had a voice that many described as “that of an angel.” Music brought him joy throughout his life, and he shared that gift with countless others as the lead singer of several bands dating back to 1954. Over the years, he performed with The Bopcats, The Goldtones, The Teasers, Southern Comfort, Midnight Special, Freelance Band, and the Mardi Gras Band. Whether on stage or surrounded by family and friends, he was happiest when music was playing.
Francis also dedicated more than 40 years to the tire sales industry, building lasting friendships and earning the respect of many throughout his career. He spent much of his working years with Rigsbee Tire Sales, Chapel Hill Tire, and Braxton Tire.
He was an avid sports fan who faithfully cheered on Wake Forest and the Los Angeles Dodgers. His family finds comfort in knowing he was able to see the Dodgers win back-to-back World Series titles last year — something that brought him tremendous happiness.
More than anything, Francis will be remembered for his kindness, his laughter, his love for music, and the way he made people feel welcome wherever he went. His presence filled a room, and his memory will forever live on in the hearts of those who loved him.
He is survived by his daughters, Lisa Borer and husband Buddy and Julie Butkus and husband Stuart; grandchildren, Kyle Ishmael, Ryan Ishmael (Kelsey), Ashley McKinney (Braxton), and Austin Lundy; great grandchildren, Brantley Ishmael, Avery Ishmael, River Ishmael, Baker McKinney, Shade Ishmael, Lennon McKinney, Birdie Ishmael, and Beck McKinney; sister, Barbara O'Connor (Paul); niece, Jean Spencer (Jim and son Andrew). He spent his later years with his dear companion, Mildred Matthis.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, May 8th at Clements Funeral Home in Durham. A visitation will be held from 1:00 to 1:45 p.m. on Saturday, May 9th at Royal Hall Funeral Home in Clinton prior to the 2:00 p.m. graveside service at Clinton Cemetery with Reverend Ken Eanes officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be made to Hock Family Pavilion: 12 Moore Drive, Suite 200, Durham, NC 27713.
He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered always.
Royal-Hall is honored to serve the Brown Family.
