Oak Island
David Matthews, Jr. 82, of Oak Island, North Carolina passed away on August 10, 2024, after a courageous battle with ALS.
David was born December 17, 1941, in Turkey, North Carolina, the son of the late David and Maxine Quinn Matthews. He was the youngest of five children.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 17, 2024, at 2:00 PM at Royal-Hall Funeral Home Chapel, at 301 McKoy St., Clinton NC, with Rev. Michael Shook officiating. Burial will follow in the Clinton Cemetery.
Mr. Matthews began his career in 1963 as an electrician in the private sector in Clinton, North Carolina. He was also employed by Beaunit Textiles before working for the County of Sampson for many years as an Electrical Inspector. In 1983, David began working for Carolina Power and Light at the Brunswick Nuclear Plant in Brunswick County until his retirement. David loved working all types of trades. He acquired state certification in electrical, plumbing, and HVAC. He preferred the completion of a project done well over travel and relaxation.
Following retirement, Mr. Matthews’ hobbies included volunteering at the New Hope Valley Railroad Museum near Raleigh, North Carolina, operating his amateur radio, and helping family and friends.
In addition to his parents, David is preceded in death by his beloved daughter, June Matthews Hickman, brothers; Curtis Matthews and William (Billy) Matthews, a sister; Carolyn Matthews Hoke, and a nephew; William Matthews, Jr.
David leaves behind his wife of 61 years, Grace Peterson Matthews; son, John David Matthews and wife Bo Matthews of San Diego, California; daughter, Amy Matthews Frink and husband Steve Frink of Bolivia, North Carolina; brother, Ward Matthews and wife Martha of Denton, Texas; Grandchildren, Lauren Hickman, Stephen Frink, Hannah Frink, Mason Frink as well as many beloved nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the services at the funeral home beginning at 1:00 PM.
