Mrs. Betty Sue (Mercer) Miller, a long-time resident of Clinton, NC, passed away peacefully at the age of 86 on Wednesday, June 18, 2025 at Rolling Ridge Assisted Living in Newton Grove. Outside of her professional life, Sue made it her mission to serve her family, her church, and the community without hesitation.
Sue was born on August 22, 1938 in Duplin County, NC. She attended Beulaville schools and graduated as her high school class Valedictorian. Sue then went on to complete post-secondary degrees at East Carolina University, UNC Greensboro, and NC State University where she earned a Master’s degree in Adult Education (Phi Kappa Phi) while growing a family with her loving and devoted husband.
Sue is survived by her husband of 67 years, William L. Miller, Jr. (Bill) of Smithfield; son, Andy Miller of Raleigh; daughters: Ronda Miller and Jill Miller Williamson (Mark) both of Smithfield; grandchildren: Ashley Henderson Schwed (Andre), Kailey Henderson Anaya (Matthew), Harrison Woodlief (Veronica), Cameron Woodlief (Moncerrat), Nicholas Woodlief, and Tyler Dunn (Samantha); great-grandchildren: Oliver and Arlo Schwed, Tobin and Lynnix Anaya, and Eric Dunn. She was preceded in death by her parents: Frank and Lillian Thomas Mercer and her brothers: Angus Wilton Mercer and Gene Beauregard “Tommy” Mercer.
Sue dedicated 42 years as an adult educator and administrator for several community colleges in the North Carolina Community College System. She received numerous accolades, recognitions, and promotions during her career. In 2011, Sue retired from Sampson Community College as Vice President of Academic Affairs.
Sue was a devoted member of First Baptist Church in Clinton for 55 years. During those years, she served in numerous official and unofficial capacities including Recording Secretary for decades. She found strength in her faith and in cherished friendships with her church family members and in the community.
The family will receive friends at 11:00 AM on Saturday, June 28, 2025 in the sanctuary of First Baptist Church, 408 College Street, Clinton with the funeral service to follow at 12:00 PM. Dr. Ray Ammons will be officiating. Due to the concern of extreme weather, a private interment will follow the service at Clinton Cemetery.
Sue’s family wishes to extend our sincere appreciation to Dorothy Kraus for her devotion to her care in her last years and to the support of the staff of Rolling Ridge Assisted Living and Gentiva Hospice.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests any donations be made to First Baptist Church in honor of Sue’s memory.
