Audrey Ray Obituary

Audrey Moore Ray,78, of Clinton, NC, passed away peacefully on May 23, 2023. When she was called home to be with the Lord, she was surrounded by family and friends, and music filled the air as the song “I Love Beach Music” played on…  She will forever remain in our hearts!

Born in Roseboro, NC on October 3, 1944, Audrey was one of three children of the late Ruth Fillyaw Moore Wells and the late John Emmett Moore. She and her brothers, the late Murphy Hogan Moore and the late John “Johnny” Emmett Moore, Jr. were raised in and grew up in Clinton, NC.  Audrey was a graduate of Clinton High School and attended Florida Southern College. Audrey’s captivating personality, enthusiasm, confidence and gift for conversation made way for a successful career in sales. Through the years, several companies were privy to Audrey’s talents and after retiring as Vice President of National Accounts with All American West Brothers Moving/Mayflower Transit, Audrey returned home to Clinton.

When you think of Audrey, her love of dancing and beach music are often the first things that come to mind. She was always ready for shag dancing whether it be right in the kitchen while preparing a meal, out in the driveway, or while at parties at friends’ houses where people gathered about just to watch her dance. For many years, she traveled to places to compete in shag competitions. Trips to Myrtle Beach, SC were frequent as shaggers gathered down at local beach clubs along Ocean Drive for weekends of shaggin’, especially for SOS events. Audrey was vibrant and her energizing spirit was contagious. Her style and charisma ensured that her dance card stayed full, and she could always be found out on the dance floor. Audrey was inducted into the Atlantic Beach, North Carolina Shagger’s Hall-of-Fame in 2010.

As fate would have it, Audrey and Dan met on the dance floor. There was a spark - - interest lingered and a bit later, a chance moment found them side-by-side at a traffic light where Dan motioned for her to pull over. That’s all it took! They started dating and the rest was history.

Audrey leaves behind her loving and caring husband of 17 years, Dan Ray of Clinton, NC; her niece, Natalie Moore Averette and her husband Brent of Virginia Beach, VA; her nephew, Murphy Scott Moore and his wife Jennifer of Raleigh, NC; her niece, Kimberly Moore Gregg and her husband Murphy of Winston-Salem, NC; four great-nephews, Chandler Hogan Averette, Carson Clarence Averette, Murphy Raleigh Moore, James “Jay” Murphy Gregg IV; one great-niece, Harris Moore Gregg and sisters-in-law, Bonnie Ray Albritton of Wilmington, NC; Rebecca Southerland Moore of Virginia Beach, VA; and Suzanne Harris Moore Williams of Winston-Salem, NC. They, along with extended family and many friends, live on and will forever cherish memories of Audrey.
