Born on September 18, 1943 in Sampson County, James was the son of the late Hardy Erastus and Audrey Marley Royal. He was a retired Assistant Resident Engineer with the NC Department of Transportation, after working fifty years and two months. He was a dedicated worker, having worked his way up from working a bushax to clear the right-of-way for 701, to becoming an Engineer, most recently working with the bridges along Interstate 40. He was passionate about his work, and respected by his fellow co-workers and friends. He was a quiet, humble man with a heart of gold. James will be missed greatly by all who knew him – because to know him, was to love him.
He is survived by his wife, Frances McLamb Royal; Daughter, Joan R. Gainey and husband, Jeffery of Clinton; son, James “Marcus” Royal of Newton Grove; brother, Carroll Royal of Clinton; two grandsons: Tyler Erastus Royal and Jared Wilson Gainey; and several nieces and nephews.
