Mr. Roland Floyd Royal, Sr., 87, of 3303 Bass Lake Rd., passed away peacefully at Sampson Regional Medical Center on September 5, 2017, with his loving family by his side.

A Funeral Service for Mr. Roland will be held on Friday, September 8, 2017 at 11:00 am at Mintz Baptist Church, 3761 Old Mintz Church Rd., Roseboro, with Dr. Robert Hunter, Dr. John McBride and Rev. Dudley Neal officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Born on December 5, 1929 in Sampson County, Mr. Roland was the son of the late Robert Lee and Florence Tew Royal.  He was a farmer all his life and a devoted husband and loving father to five children who called him “My Daddy”.  He served many years as Music Director and Deacon at Elizabeth Baptist Church and for the last several years was a member of Mintz Baptist church where he sang in the choir.  He loved to sing southern gospel music and sang in several quartets.  He was on the Board of Directors for more than 20 years for Fleet Sessoms Memorial Sing and the Sampson County Gospel Sing.  He was inducted into the Sampson County Gospel Music Hall of Fame in 2012. 

Mr. Roland is survived by his wife of 67 years, Peggy Newman Royal; three daughters: Erica Royal Vandiford and fiance’ Tim Miller; Pamela Royal Carter and husband, Mike; Edna Royal West Naylor and husband, Maxton; two sons: James Curtis Royal; Roland Floyd Royal, Jr. and wife, Sue, all of Clinton; and a brother, Rev. James Peyton Royal of Clarkton.   He was also blessed with eight grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and numerous step-grandchildren and step-great grandchildren.  He was loved by all his family and friends and will be greatly missed by everyone.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his four sisters: Willa Dean Royal, Annie Mae Royal Spell, Malvene Royal Hobbs and Genevieve Royal Tucker; and his four brothers: Elijah Lee Royal, Charles Vennon Royal, Gibson Royal and Brunell Royal.

The family will receive friends on Thursday evening, September 7, 2017 from 6-8 pm at Royal-Hall Funeral Home; and other times at his home.
